Spanish people are funny ! In Madrid, they constructed a new set of tunnels to facilitate the circulation of cars towards the city. In English, that would be called something like "by-pass". Probably Spanish people thought this word was cool and to the point, so they wanted to keep it. However, they also have a law that prevent them from using English words. Their solution was simply to invent a Spanish spelling for the word, hence "baipàs", that you pronounce like "by-pass", means the same, and is written on the traffic signs at the entrance of the tunnels ! I really would not have guessed the meaning of this "baipàs" word if they would not have told me ;-) lol lol |
